Address and entrances
Sections 1–26 are in the old part and sections 27–42 in the Campo Santo part. The plan marks entrances at Stephansplatz, Kapuzinerstraße, Thalkirchner Straße and Pestalozzistraße.
Getting here by public transport
Bus 62 to Waltherstraße.
Parking at the cemetery
Paid public parking spaces are on the cemetery side of Thalkirchner Straße, near the Waltherstraße stop.

Location profile
History and distinctive features
Established outside the former city walls in 1563, the Old Southern Cemetery became Munich’s central cemetery in 1789. From 1818, Gustav Vorherr and Friedrich von Sckell reshaped it with neoclassical monuments and 97 arcade bays; Friedrich von Gärtner added the campo santo section in 1850. Burials ceased at the end of 1943. Today the protected cemetery combines major art and urban history with an ecologically valuable inner-city green space.
