Location profile

History and distinctive features

The Old Northern Cemetery opened in 1868 to plans by municipal architect Arnold Zenetti. Modelled on a campo santo, sixteen rectangular burial plots sit within an arcade wall around a central cross by Johann von Halbig. The last burial took place in 1939, and burial operations ended permanently after wartime damage in 1944. Around 800 graves and numerous historic monuments remain; culturally and legally, the grounds are still a cemetery rather than a park.
